In response to the NPR article (link below) we listened to in class, please write a paragraph that compares the findings in the article to the society Ray Bradbury created in Fahrenheit 451. What parts of his fears have come true? Do you think our society has valid reason to fear the decline in reading, or is it something that we do not need to worry about? Explain your answer.

After reading through the commentary, scoring guide, and sample essays from the 1987 AP Literature prompt, please reflect on your own experience with our in class timed write. Respond to the following questions in a comment below:
1. According to the AP scoring guide, what score do you think you would give your own essay (0-9)? Why would you give yourself this score? Use the language on the rubric to help you answer this question. 2. What elements from the "High" scoring essay are you already including in your writing, and what elements did you notice that you may need to add? 3. What will be your focus moving forward in order to improve your writing? (All people can work to become better writers- even those who are already advanced!) After reading the short story "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury, write an 8- (or more) sentence summary of the story. Make sure your summary includes the following: - Specific characters' names and description/elements of the setting - A basic description of the plot progression - Bradbury's use of literary devices (figurative language, suspense, foreshadowing, symbolism) - Bradbury's tone, and the story's mood - The story's underlying universal truths or themes Due Monday, April 7, 2014, at 8:00 AM Type your rhetorical precis response to the article "An Ugly Toll of Technology: Impatience and Forgetfulness.” The template can be found on our Honors 10 website.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4663852 Final post due Wednesday, March Post your rhetorical precis for Kurt Vonnegut's letter below. You may use the model to help or inspire you, but please do not imitate it word for word. If you need to see the sentence frames, you may download them from our Honors 10 page under Fahrenheit 451.
Kurt Vonnegut, in the letter “You Have Insulted Me: A Letter” (1973), asserts that the members of the Drake school board who burned his novel have not only insulted him, but also insulted the children in their school district and made a mockery of American values. Vonnegut supports his assertion by continually questioning the motives and intelligence of the board members, calling them “uneducated” and “un-American.” He writes an entire paragraph in which he references his own character, portraying himself as a father, a veteran, and a hard-worker- all of which are ideal characteristics of “true Americans.” Vonnegut’s purpose is to not only call into question the actions of the school district, but to defend all writers and their intent to educate with a wealth of perspectives. He does this not only to make them question their actions, but also so that they might feel guilty, remorseful, or even stupid for what they have done. He writes in a defensive and sarcastic tone to the school board members, perhaps keeping in mind that the letter could also educate the general public. Due Friday, March 28, 2014- 8:00 AM If you could burn any book that has ever been written so that no person can ever read that book again, which book would you choose and why? What would be the positive and negative consequences of burning this book for all eternity?

Due Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at 8:00 AM When discussing gender standards and stereotypes, your article explained that "males are expected to independent, assertive, and competitive; females are expected to be more passive, sensitive, and supportive." Later, the article discussed differences in the early development of males and females, explaining that "girls excel early in verbal skills, but boys excel in visual-spatial and math skills."
Reflect on your own experience growing up, and explain whether or not you fit within the description of your own gender according to the article. Then, using evidence from the article, explain WHY you are the way you are. (Factors could be your family, parents (mother or father), culture, society, friends, or other reasons stated in the article. Make sure that you incorporate both facts from the article AS WELL AS personal experience. One Paragraph Due Monday at 8:00 AM |
